Mansfield trustees voted to give students a day and a half vacation at last week’s school board meeting.
Due to new state regulations that require 75,600 minutes of attendance instead of 180 days, the school board adjusted the 2015-2016 calendar, turning the scheduled half day on April 15 into a full-day teacher development day and making June 1 the last day of school. June 2, which had been scheduled as the last day of the 2015-2016 school year, will also be a teacher workday.
April 15 will become the district second bad weather makeup day, said Superintendent Jim Vaszauskas. The school’s other bad weather makeup day is April 18.
“We will not have to use those unless we have catastrophic weather and go under 75,000 minutes,” he said. “We would have to miss quite a few days.”
The new law, which was passed as House Bill 2610, counts recesses and other intermissions such as lunch as instructional time.
