Join the cardboard creativity during the 25th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta on April 26 at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor. Registration fees range from $60 to $80. Entry deadline is April 14.
The regatta challenges amateur boat builders, youth and adults alike, to build, navigate, and float (or sink!) their cardboard creations in Hurricane Harbor’s Wave Pool. Many trophies and bragging rights are on the line including, the Steve Calloway Legacy Award for Best of Show, the Rah Rah! Award for most spirited crew and the Titanic Award for most spectacular sinking. And, if you just can’t win an award on your own, you can always Bribe the Judge. Participating high schools compete for school spirit and bragging rights for the High School Challenge trophy.
Groups, companies and organizations can step up the regatta challenge by participating in the Team Challenge, which combines the boat races with a Horseshoes tournament and 3-Point Basketball Hoops Shoot. Entry fees for both sports are $50 each.
Not every boat is fast enough to make it to the finals to brave the waves, but once again this year, adult division boats can take the Brave the Waves challenge for $20. The first 15 boats to sign up at the River Legacy booth at Hurricane Harbor will get five minutes to test their boats.
Never miss a local story.
Regatta day activities include a children’s area featuring a Mini-Boat “Raingutter” Regatta and Hook’s Lagoon; unlimited rides on the Tornado PLUS Tsunami Surge & Typhoon Twister; SkyCoaster Swing; Build-on-Site boats; Whale Sail; and concessions. During the Mini-Boat Regatta, children ages 4 to 12 sail their mini boats to victory by blowing them down a rain gutter. New this year is a Mini-Boat adult division. Mini-Boat kits can be purchased at River Legacy Living Science Center.
Cost to enter the Mini-Boat Regatta is $5.
The Cardboard Boat Regatta is a fund-raising event presented by River Legacy Foundation and the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department. Proceeds from the event benefit the educational programs of River Legacy Living Science Center and improvements to River Legacy Parks.
