The Byron Nelson volleyball team is coming off of a playoff season that coach Libby Pacheco hopes to continue upon for the 2014 campaign.

If the Lady Bobcats are going to get back into the postseason this year, it is going to take a strong effort from the entire team, and Delaney Duis is no exception.

The Nelson setter exudes leadership in every facet of her game, and Pacheco said she brings a lot to the team.

“She's been on the varsity her third year,” Pacheco said. “She was on the varsity as a freshman, so by now, she brings a lot of confidence and experience. She's treating it this year like her team. She is going out and doing a great job of running the offense.”

Duis said she sees her role on the team as being multifaceted.

“I try to bring a positive energy and keep the team going,” Duis said. “I also try to be the best leader I can be without being bossy. I just try to make it so that everyone is excited about playing volleyball.”

Reflecting on last season when the Lady Bobcats advanced four rounds into the postseason, Duis said it was a lot of fun.

“I really enjoyed last season,” Duis said. “We had a great team, and we had great team chemistry. It was a very good season for us. We lost a lot of great players (to graduation), but even with losing those players I still believe we can be successful this year.”

Duis said she had a couple of aspects she tried to work on during the off season.

“Just trying to be a better leader,” Duis said. “I have tried to become more consistent with my sets and learn to run an offense better.”

The Nelson junior said she has a couple of goals for this season.

“I want to lead the team through adversity and help us to be successful,” Duis said. “From a team perspective, I want us to grow and play better together. Our team is mostly juniors, so I want us to build the program for next year.

Duis said that she does have an interesting hobby that actually helps her in her game.

“I've really gotten into reading over the last few years, and I enjoy playing Sudoku,” Duis said. “I find that Sudoku helps me on the court because you are not just using one square. You have to use them and make them work all together. It's the same on the court. We have all work together on the court.”

In order to repeat on the success the team enjoyed last season, Duis said it will take a couple of things.

“We have to continue to work hard and grow as a team,” Duis said. “It feels like we've figured out the chemistry, and now it is just a matter of working hard and putting in that extra effort.”

Pacheco said that Duis is going to be an important part of any success the Lady Bobcats enjoy this season.

“She's critical,” Pacheco said. “She's not only running the offense, but she is also pretty offensive herself. She is perceptive in her skills, but also in her leadership skills as well. She has really taken a leadership role.”
