Keller 7-on-7 team takes third at nationals
The Keller Indians’ 15U 7-on-7 team picked up third place at the IMG 7v7 National Championship football tournament recently in Bradenton, Fla.
After qualifying for the national tournament by taking second place at a regional qualifying tournament in April, Keller went 2-2 in pool play on the first day of the national meet. They went into bracket play as the 11th seed. The Indians then reeled off wins over the eighth, sixth and third seeded teams before losing to the eventual champion from Miami, Fla.
The top seeded Texas Spartans from the Lewisville area were bumped out of the tournament in the quarterfinal round.
Never miss a local story.
The Keller team is comprised of rising freshmen and sophomores at Keller High.
Fireworks for wrestlers
In order to help cover expenses for some Northwest wrestling team members traveling to Iowa for a wrestling camp, head coach Dan McCready had an idea as hot as a firecracker. To assist in helping with travel expenses, McCready and the Texan Wrestling Club opened and operated two fireworks stands in the Benbrook area prior to the July 4 holiday.
A complete total of the proceeds was not available prior to the press deadline, but club member Nick McClellan said he felt the earnings from the stands were able to cover the needed expenses and help them move toward their other goal of purchasing a passenger van. The van would further cut costs for the Texan Wrestling Club in travel costs for future camps and events. Van rental to travel to Iowa was estimated at $12,000.
Another opportunity for the Texans wrestlers to expand their fundraising and mat experience will come on July 25-26, when they host the Mid-Summer Mat Bash. The dual tournament is attracting teams from nine states, including Oklahoma, Florida, Kansas, Nevada and Pennsylvania.
