Volunteers gathered Saturday at Keller’s WestWind Christian Church to help prepare the community garden for the coming growing season.

The church’s “Let’s Grow!” event on May 17, had community and church volunteers help build new concrete beds next to the current ones, organizer Pam Shoop said.

The garden produces fresh greens and other vegetables which the church harvests for donations to organizations such as Keller Community Storehouse, Food for the Soul and Sharing the Harvest.

Shoop said the church, at 1300 Sarah Brooks Drive, donated more than 1,000 pounds of produce last year.

Half of the produce grown is donated while the other half is used for the church.

Volunteers have included kindergarteners at Shady Grove Elementary School, who visit weekly to watch how the food grows. Several Eagle Scouts also have done projects at the garden, Shoop said.
