A team of Keller district elementary and intermediate students advanced to the state tournament for Destination Imagination April 11-12 in Pflugerville.
The group recently placed second at the Mid-Cities Destination Imagination Meet to earn a trip to state.
Destination Imagination is a team competition that incorporates science, technology, math and fine arts into collaborative problem solving.
The Keller team participated in the Scientific Challenge “Going to Extremes.”
The theme was to explore an extreme environment in the universe, present a story about characters who adapt to survive an extreme environment and design gear that demonstrated technical methods. The team researched the dwarf planet Eris and what a space trip to the area could entail.
Coach Bronwyn Sullenberger said that students divide up tasks, from creating sets and writing scripts to crafting prop gear and building mechanisms.
“They all work on it, but they play to individual strengths within the group,” she said.
Team members are: J.T. Sleeper, Parkwood Hill Intermediate fifth grader; Skylee McLoud, Bette Perot Elementary fourth grader; Amanda Li, Bette Perot Elementary fourth grader; Connor Li, Bette Perot Elementary fourth grader; Samuel Maschal, Friendship Elementary fourth grader; Rebecca Shundo, Friendship Elementary fourth grader; Brendan Sullenberger, Willis Lane Elementary fourth grader; and coaches Stan Maschal and Bronwyn Sullenberger.
