Keller school district officials took another step on the path to calling a November bond election.
At Thursday night’s board meeting, trustees selected a Dallas architecture firm for a conceptual design of a career and technology center.
Board members voted 6-0 to approve Corgan to provide services including site selection, budgeting and program and space planning.
Administrators received submissions from 14 architecture firms in their request for qualifications. A committee composed of administrators, community members and Trustee Ruthie Keyes interviewed representatives from Corgan and three other firms, all chosen based on their experience designing education training facilities.
“They all presented very well, and it was a hard decision,” Keyes said.
Corgan stood out because of the company’s experience in working both inside and outside education, said Hudson Huff, executive director of facility services.
“Their firm was more diversified in various industries, such as healthcare, retail, data storage facilities and the corporate sector,” Huff said. “The committee felt strongly this could be a great benefit to the project with their ability to bring in industry experts in designing whatever facility solution is determined.”
Corgan designed Dubiski Career and Technology High School in the Grand Prairie school district, as well as the North Side Culinary, Hospitality and Event Management facility for the Fort Worth district and a career and technical training center for the Red Oak district.
District officials have agreed to pay Corgan $35,000 prior to the bond vote, with funds coming from 2008 bond savings. If voters approve the bond, Corgan would receive a fee of 6 percent of construction costs for the CTE center.
A successful November bond election could raise as much as $140 million without increasing the property tax rate, already at the state cap for Keller schools.
Other items under consideration include an elementary school in the southwest corner of the district, additions and renovations to older campuses.
