Already the top school fund-raising event for the American Diabetes Association, the Keller district’s ninth annual School Walk for Diabetes on March 29 should be the biggest yet.

Last year’s walk included more than 600 walkers and raised in excess of $44,000. In the fall, Keller was recognized by the American Diabetes Association for raising the most money of any district in the nation.

Keller school nurses organize the event to increase awareness of type 1 and type 2 diabetes and to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association to find a cure.

“You can’t do anything about getting type 1 diabetes, but we sure want to find a cure,” said Deborah Gregor, Keller High nurse and a founding organizer. “The risk for type 2 can change with lifestyle. Nutrition and exercise can delay or reverse the risks of type 2 diabetes.”

This year’s event at the Keller ISD stadium is much more than a walk. Dallas Sidekicks will present a soccer clinic from 8 to 9 a.m. An NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition will take place. Baylor Grapevine Hospital will conduct health screenings. Sodexo, the district’s food service provider, will offer cooking demonstrations and healthy snacks. Live entertainment, face painting and a photo booth and a few big surprises will also be part of the festivities.

Participants can donate ($5 a ticket or 5 for $20) for chances to win Dallas Cowboys tickets, a 50-inch television, a laptop and more. Walkers are eligible to win a portion of $10,000 in door prizes. A silent auction will include two nights at the Gaylord Texan, golf packages and gift baskets.

The walk is Keller’s wrap up event for the Lifestyle Improvement Challenge, a competition among Keller, Grapevine-Colleyville, Birdville, Hurst-Euless-Bedford and Northwest school districts. The contest — sponsored by Baylor Grapevine Hospital — awards points to districts for offering programs promoting health and wellness. The district earning the most points receives $25,000, second receives $15,000 and third gets $10,000 from Baylor Grapevine.
