For the fourth year in a row, a team of students from Hillwood Middle School advanced to the state MATHCOUNTS contest in Austin at the end of March. At the regional contest featuring 25 schools in the Fort Worth area, the Hillwood team placed fourth overall. Members are Andrew Lee (fifth place individual), Stephanie Tran, Lainie Dickey and Sandhya Shankar. MATHCOUNTS is a partnership between the National Society of Professional Engineers and schools to promote math.
Jenna Anderson, a seventh grader at Fossil Hill Middle School, won state in the American History Essay Contest for the Daughters of the American Republic (DAR). Jenna will attend the state conference next month. DAR is a non-profit women’s service group dedicated to preserving American history and better education.
The February Brown Bag Lunch with Superintendent Randy Reid will be Feb. 20 at Lone Star Elementary School. Each month, parents and community members are invited to an informal Q&A session with the superintendent. Sessions start at noon in the campus library
The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. March 1 at the Keller High School Fine Arts Center, 601 N. Pate Orr Rd. The performance is sponsored by Keller ISD, the City of Keller and local partners with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Texas Commission of the Arts. Tickets are $5 each or four for $15 and are available at Keller Town Hall, the Keller Pointe and Keller Senior Activities Center. Northwest is drawing high marks for its hospitality. The school district’s Academy of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Services has been included in the 2014 Hospitality 100, which is selected by the National Center for Hospitality Studies at Sullivan University. This group of 100 is made up of high schools from across the country that excel in the areas of culinary arts, baking and pastry arts and/or hospitality management.
Northwest school district students’ best technology-based projects created by an individual or a group will be on display at the 2014 Techno Expo, scheduled for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at Northwest High School. Entries will include animation, desktop publishing, and digital video and web site design. Food at the event will be provided by the district’s Culinary Arts program.
