Keller High advances to state in Academic Decathlon

Academic Decathlon teams from all four Keller district high schools competed well at the Region XI contest Jan. 24-25 in Plano, with Keller High School’s team advancing to state.

Keller High placed first overall and third in the Super Quiz Relay. Timber Creek’s team was third overall, placing second in the Super Quiz Relay. Fossil Ridge was fourth overall and Central, sixth.

In Academic Decathlon, every team consists of nine members: three “A” students in the honors division, three “B” students in the scholastic division and three “C” students in the varsity division. All nine team members are tested in 10 subjects: art, economics, literature, math, music, science, social science, essay, interview and speech. The final event is the Super Quiz relay with each team member taking turns answering questions on stage.

With the first place finish, Keller High advances to the state contest Feb. 20-23 in Pflugerville.

KHS students bringing home medals for finishing in the top three in one or more events are: Chris Baker, Claire Beckley, Blayke Drury, Amy Gee, Kyle Harper, Trey Hubbard, Eric Murillo, Christian Turnley and Ben Wondwossen.

Timber Creek students placing in the top three in an event are: Tony Annerino, Nate Claxton, Sarah Davidson, Ty Goolsby, Madison Jacobs, Chris Kiele, Christina Mai and Sam Ruan.

Fossil Ridge students who received top three medals are: Candice Allison Goldsmith, Philip Morrow, Jonathan Mosteller-Smith, Amy Sergeant and Alexis Sikorski.

Central students who finished in the top three in an event are: Garett Hutchinson, John Selvarathinam, Alexandria Walker and Devasri Warrier.
