Byron Nelson High School will join Northwest and the four Keller district high schools in new District 5-6A for University Interscholastic League (UIL)competitions for the next two school years.
On Monday morning, UIL officials announced the new groupings for athletics, fine arts and academic contests on the organization’s website, uiltexas.org. Instead of public schools being divided by size into five classifications, schools are now separated into six. The new 6A classification is for schools with more than 2100 students.
District 5-6A will be composed of Byron Nelson, Central, Denton Guyer, Denton Ryan, Fossil Ridge, Keller, Northwest and Timber Creek high schools.
Byron Nelson, which opened in 2009, is moving up from 5-4A. The four Keller schools and Northwest are changing from 4-5A.
