Keller district officials decided to hold school on Feb. 17 instead of June 6 for a bad weather make up day after last month’s ice storm. The other make up day is April 18.
Stock Show champion
Keller High School senior Lawson Belcher won the Grand Champion award in the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Art Contest. Belcher’s painting, “The Lonely Longhorn,” was chosen from more than 1,000 entries. For his efforts, he won a $3,000 scholarship and will receive a portion of the proceeds when the painting is auctioned off. The artwork will be on display at the Stock Show through Feb. 18.
End of semester
High school students will have early release on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week for semester finals. All students will be released early on Friday. Students are out of school on Monday, Jan. 27, as staff members have a professional development day.
“Communicating with your Teen” is the topic for the next Parent Workshop, set for 6 p.m. Jan. 23 at Hillwood Middle School, 8250 Parkwood Hill Blvd. The workshop covers teen brain development, communication and ways to become closer to your teenager.
Brown bag lunch
Superintendent Randy Reid will host his monthly Brown Bag Lunch on Jan. 23 at Basswood Elementary School, 3100 Clay Mountain Trail. The events offer parents and community members the chance to ask questions and hear the latest district news. The sessions start at noon in the school library.
Big event upcoming
Northwest High School’s third annual Big Event community service day is scheduled for the morning of April 5. Teams of Northwest students will go out to each of the communities represented by the high school’s attendance zone and perform helpful projects in public areas and private residences. Last year, more than 70 jobs were completed by 900-plus student volunteers. Northwest Trustees have a regular meeting scheduled for a Thursday. The school board will convene a regular meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 30 in the board room of the district’s administration building, 2001 Texan Drive in Justin. The board returns to its typical Monday schedule on Feb. 10.
The Northwest school district for the 13th consecutive year has earned the Meritorious Budget Award for excellence in budget presentation from the Association of School Business Officials International. The district’s 2013-14 budget was submitted for rigorous review based on the district’s skills in development, analyzing and presenting of the budget. Public viewing of new textbooks under consideration for adoption by the Northwest school district is now through Feb. 7. The proposed texts are for kindergarten through eighth-grade math and kindergarten through 12th-grade science. The viewing is at Wayne A. Cox Elementary School, 1100 Litsey Road, Roanoke. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, with extended hours from 3 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 30.
The Northwest school district’s annual TechnoExpo is scheduled for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at Northwest High School.
High turnout for flu shots
A big crowd turned out for Northwest’s flu vaccination clinic on Jan. 14. The district at its administration building in Justin offered flu shots and flu mists at a cost of $20 for adults and $10 for children. The initial supply of 200 shots and 40 mists ran out, but the district was able to secure more than 100 more shots to serve the high turnout, district officials said.
