In his third year at quarterback for the Byron Nelson football team, Preston Haire said that he is feeling more confident than ever in playing his position.
Haire helped lead the team to a 28-20 victory in the season opener against Flower Mound by passing for two touchdowns and rushing for a third, and said that his objectives for this season revolve around being the best leader he possibly can be.
“Basically, I try to bring leadership, just being a senior,” Haire said. “I also try to bring the experience of having started since my sophomore year, and trying to bring some swagger to the game.”
Haire said that he has been very impressed with what he has seen from his team this season and said he is confident that they are capable of having a successful season.
Never miss a local story.
“I think this year’s team is something special,” Haire said. “I think that we have a lot better leadership as a team and that we have matured a lot since the off season. I think we are going to have a good year.”
Nelson finished last season with a 3-7 overall record and 2-5 mark in district, and Haire said the goals for this year are to make significant improvements from that.
“Personally, I’d like to become a better leader as a quarterback and then just have a great year,” Haire said. “I think as a team, it’s to make playoffs, go a few rounds deep and see what we can do from there.”
The Nelson quarterback is not without his softer side, either, saying he recently adopted an interesting pet.
“I have a pet horny toad,” Haire said. “I was out in West Texas and I caught it, so I decided to keep it.”
The horny toad’s name is Charlie.
Haire said that his new pet did not necessarily signify a desire to play college ball at TCU, but said that would be “nice,” and added that he has been approached by a couple of DII schools already.
In order to have a successful season and make a good run in the playoffs it will take a couple of things, he said.
“We have to make sure that we don’t hit our peak too early,” Haire said. “That needs to happen later in the season. We also have to have our leaders step up and lett our experience on the field work for us, and then just coming together as a team and doing what we know how to do.”
