Calista Lothliam received a major honor recently when she was invited to play in the First Tee Open event at Pebble Beach.
The Northwest golfer is a member of the First Tee of Fort Worth and was one of six golfers in the Fort Worth/Dallas area invited to participate in last week’s event. According to a news release, “the junior golfers will be teamed with 81 PGA Tour Champions players and 162 amateurs as they compete for the pro-junior title at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Poppy Hills Golf Course.”
Lothliam was paired with Greg Kraft and was finished two under par in the first round of competition.
The Northwest golfer said it was a great honor to be invited to play Pebble Beach and said that she will always be grateful for the opportunity.
“Some things I hope to take away from my experience at Pebble Beach is just getting to play some great golf and getting to learn from the pros who have so much wisdom they can pass down,” Lothliam said. “I also hope to meet new people who I will keep in contact with over the years.”
Texans golf coach Nathan Moses said Lothliam’s invitation was quite a coup for the young golfer.
“It is a tremendous honor for Calista to be invited to the First Tee Open,” Moses said. “To be able to represent the First Tee of Fort Worth and all the people here in the area pouring into our game is a great opportunity to represent how beneficial golf can be for other young men and women. Calista is a team captain, leading our athletes as well as a leader in the Northwest ISD STEM academy (and) she is a great choice to represent our school and team.”
Moses said that the process to be selected for the competition was quite extensive for his senior golfer.
“Calista went through an interview process much like a scholarship application,” Moses said. “Golf was a part of the process, but just as the First Tee use the game to teach other attributes to be a successful person. The award process was much more about the individual than just her golfing abilities.”
The competition ran from Sept. 13-18, and Lothiam said playing at the hallowed Pebble Beach courses was incredible.
“The experience being here is indescribable,” Lothliam said while at the tournament. “It is absolutely breathtaking, and I have been able to meet so many new people. The golf courses are a blast to play and the pros are so nice and helpful. It’s a wonderful event and words cannot describe the feeling being here.”
