HMH Super Sox was carrying a toilet bowl scrubber, a broom and a mop on her back, along with a pink box full of cleaning supplies Tuesday. The pony of the Americas wore huge pink sunglasses and a blond wig.
Her rider was Bubbie Zoffman, aka 15-year-old Alaina McKenzie of Edmond, Okla. Her pink business cards shed more light on their story: “Got Spotz? Call Bubbie, 12345 Easy Wash Way, 1 Suite Smell, Borax, Ammonia. Phone: 800-OUT-SPOT.”
The get-up won Alaina and Super Sox the blue ribbon in costume class Tuesday morning, the first day of competition for the pony of the Americas breed at the Stock Show. They bested eight competitors, including Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz riding a scarecrow, Alice in Wonderland and Mother Goose riding a POA dressed as a lamb.
“We got tired of using the Cleopatra costume, so I came up with this,” said Alaina’s mother, Kathy McKenzie. She said her two older daughters had used the Cleopatra costume.
Never miss a local story.
Judges look at costumes and listen to a two-minute presentation from each exhibitor.
“The speech has to be entertaining,” Kathy McKenzie said.
For Alaina, who takes drama classes at Edmond North High School, that was easy.
“That class really helps,” Alaina said. “Our teacher tells us to project, and I do.”
Bubbie Zoffman was definitely animated before judge Scot Jackson of Stephenville.
Alaina dressed the part of a cleaning lady with pink Keds high-tops, a pink-and-white housecoat, white pants and what she called “an old lady wig.”
Alaina and Super Sox won the costume title last year at the Stock Show and took the grand honor at the Pony of the Americas Club National Congress in St. Louis last summer.
They plan to compete at 30 shows this year.
Kathy McKenzie also trains 11-year-old Sophia Mazerole, who was runner-up in the costume class. She was in the Mother Goose outfit and had dressed her pony, Mighty Majestic, as a lamb.
The mom and trainer said she brought 15 kids from the Edmond area to compete.
“I thought I would have been done with all this,” Kathy McKenzie said. “But here we are again.”
