A fire early Saturday left a vacant east-side church heavily damaged, but congregants pledged to hold Sunday services in the parking lot.
Fort Worth firefighters were dispatched at 6:20 a.m. to Rise and Shine Church of Christ, 3700 Fitzhugh Ave., the Fire Department said in a news release.
It took 26 firefighters about 15 minutes to extinguish the blaze, according to the news release, but damage was estimated at $40,000 and the building is expected to be a total loss.
Nobody was injured in the fire, but afterward a senior leader of the church suffered shortness of breath and was transported to a hospital by MedStar.
The cause of the blaze was under investigation, but criminal activity was not suspected, according to the news release.
