An Abilene detective who, along with two other investigators, was headed to Dallas for a crimes against children conference was killed Sunday afternoon in a traffic crash on Interstate 20, police said.
The detective was identified by police as Elise Ybarra, 33, who had been on the force since November 2014. She was a child abuse investigator with the department’s special victims unit.
Ybarra was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Detectives Chris Milliorn and Robert Collins were taken to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Ybarra was driving an unmarked detectives’ vehicle when she entered a line of slow-moving eastbound traffic on Interstate 20 just outside the Abilene city limits, police said. Minutes later, an eastbound white Chevrolet pickup came upon the traffic and collided with the detectives’ vehicle. No information on the pickup driver was available.
DPS troopers are investigating the crash.
Ybarra began her law enforcement career with Sedalia Police Department in Missouri. She was sworn in as an Abilene officer in November 2014. She served as patrol officer for two years and transferred to the special victims unit in December 2016.
Survivors include her husband, Adam Ybarra, and their 10-month-old daughter.
