A man who tried to hide in a wooded area where officers found a missing child faces sexual assault and kidnapping charges, police said Sunday.

Police identified the suspect as Edis L. Moya Alas, 35, of El Salvador.

Moya Alas was taken into custody Saturday afternoon when the 6-year-old girl was found in the wooded area at Titus Paulsel Park, just over a mile from her home in the Polytechnic area. She was located after a resident assisting in the search reported hearing what sounded like a child screaming.

Moya Alas has not made a statement to police.

Police have not determined what, if any, relationship he has with the family, who live in the 3500 block of Avenue K.

Moya Alas was in the Mansfield Jail on Sunday, facing charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child and aggravated kidnapping. Bail was set at $200,000. An immigration hold was placed on Moya Alas after federal agents determined he was in the country illegally.

The girl was found just before 2 p.m. Saturday. Police had been looking for her since about 4:45 a.m. that day.

She had no visible injuries when she was found but was taken to a hospital to be checked, police said.

Her parents had locked up the house and gone to bed at about 10 p.m., with their daughter on the couch. When her father woke up around 4 a.m. Saturday, the front door was open, and she was nowhere to be found.

An Amber Alert was not issued in the case because the early information provided to officers on the scene did not meet the state requirements to call for one, police said.

“There has to be some type of reasonable suspicion or probable cause that would lead the law enforcement agencies to believe an individual is in imminent fear of serious bodily injury or death,” officer Jimmy Pollozani, a Fort Worth police spokesman, said via email.

Fort Worth police notified local law enforcement agencies in North Texas and also entered her as a missing person in the Texas Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center, Pollozani said.
