Drivers impacted by the closure of Randol Mill Road from Johnson to Florence roads have about a month to go.
Crews have closed the popular north-south corridor to relocate water and sewer utilities in preparation for a Texas Department of Transportation expansion, since mid-June.
Southlake’s Public Works department said the project is on track to finish by Aug. 9.
“We are doing everything we can to get it opened prior to Aug. 9,” said Cheryl Taylor, Deputy Director of Public Works.
Drivers have been detoured by taking Johnson or Florence roads to N. Pearson Lane and at rush hour, cars are backed up along the two-lane roadways with the influx of drivers normally on two different roads.
A 2013 traffic study showed that the closed portion of Randol Mill handled about 6,332 automobiles in either direction daily and Pearson from Johnson to Florence handles about 3,343 drivers in either direction daily.
Southlake installed temporary four-way stops at the affected N. Pearson Lane intersections and at afternoon rush hour Southlake and Keller police direct traffic.
“Our police and the Southlake police have done a great job providing help when they need to be,” said Matthew Kite, Keller Public Works director.
Southlake Public Works director Bob Price said once Randol Mill is opened, the temporary four way stops will be removed. He added that the city may engage in a future study to see if a four-way stop would be warranted.
Both cities notified drivers about the traffic change online and visited with people who live along Randol Mill.
Kite said communicating with drivers helped limit their frustration.
“I’m quite pleased with the lack of any complaints that I've gotten,” he said. “I’m surprised we haven't had more complaints.”
TxDOT will expand Randol Mill into a divided four-lane roadway with construction expected to begin in January 2015. Taylor said during that project, there will be phases that require lane closures and possible detours.
