With the success of a pilot recycling program launched last year, Grapevine is encouraging even more recycling by creating a brush diversion program that will launch today.
The City Council approved an ordinance for the program in January.
The program calls for green waste to be picked up the first and third Wednesday of every month. Bulk and yard waste will be picked up the second and fourth Wednesday and, if necessary, the fifth Wednesday.
The city and Republic Services are introducing the program to help keep clean brush and yard waste out of landfills, as well as to increase recycling.
“We are working hard to divert recyclable material away from our landfills,” said Dewey Stoffels, public works environmental manager for the city.
Weekly trash collection will continue as usual, but residents will have two opportunities every month to ensure their recyclable waste won’t end up in landfills. Wednesday is the only service day that will change.• First and third Wednesdays of each month: clean brush and yard waste only. Bulk service will not be provided. Tree limbs, brush, leaves and grass clippings in approved containers will be collected. Grass clippings and leaves must be in paper mulch bags or reusable plastic containers not to exceed 33 gallons or 50 pounds. Plastic garbage bags with grass clippings or leaves will not be accepted on brush-only days.
• Second, fourth and fifth, if applicable, Wednesdays: normal bulk and brush for landfills. Bulk items include items weighing more than 50 pounds, large piles of brush, yard waste, furniture, mattresses, fence pickets, toilets, stoves, dishwashers, water tanks, lawn furniture and exercise equipment. Clean brush and yard waste, such as tree limbs, brush, leaves and grass clippings will also be accepted on bulk Wednesdays.
The city recently started using a new My Waste mobile application for smartphones or tablets. The free application offers garbage, recycling and special waste collection details.
Special features include a search function that offers information about what to do with regular or out-of-the-ordinary items. There are also tips for reducing and recycling waste in apartment buildings. Grapevine residents can download the app at my-waste.mobi/TX-Grapevine/.
