Chef Scott Horwitz is all about teaching parents and kids how to eat healthy.
He also has a penchant for green foods.
So those ingredients combined nicely last Thursday when Hortitz presented Family Night: Irish Cooking with Chef Scott at the Grapevine Public Library.
“I used lots of green ingredients like spinach,” he said.
Library director Janis Roberson said the program was in keeping with their efforts to offer fun, as well as educational programs, for adults and children.
Horwitz sits on the Remington College of Culinary Arts Program Advisory Committee, the Dallas Coalition for the Prevention of Childhood Obesity and the Health Care Commission of Collin County subcommittee on Obesity Avoidance.
Horwitz lived in the Washington, D.C. area where his love for food began in his teens and his mentors were Julia Childs, Jacques Pépin and Jean Louis Palladin. As an adult, he taught private cooking classes, taking his students on tours to restaurants and upscale food outlets. He also catered for several federal and state officials.
His work with children’s education began in 1992 when he was an advocate for some of the cable educational initiatives.
Over the years, Horwitz said he has seen how the “food revolution” is being accepted in North Texas.
“I am all about bringing fun to fruits and vegetables and teaching kids about food, nutrition and cooking in an engaging way,” the chef said.
