Dylan Gonzales has emerged as one of the top receivers in District 8-5A this season, and coach Randy Jackson said he has been a big part of the success the Mustangs have enjoyed so far.
Gonzales had 412 yards receiving and five touchdowns heading into Friday’s game with Richland, and Jackson said for someone who has never played the position, Gonzales is certainly fitting right in.
“Dylan brings speed and toughness to our receiver corp,” Jackson said. “He is also very intelligent and coachable. This is his first year to play receiver, and he has been outstanding.”
Grapevine was unbeaten before their narrow loss last week against Richland and Gonzales said he has been impressed with how his team has performed to this point.
“This has really been a breakout season for Mustang football,” Gonzales said. “We know how much potential we have, so it is important that we continue to work and prepare as if was are the best.”
Gonzales, who also plays baseball and is a member of the National Honor Society, said that he tries to contribute as much as possible to the team.
“I try to bring leadership to our receiving corps,” Gonzales said. “And I challenge myself to succeed in everything that I do, whether it be a meeting, in the weight room or on the field.”
Gonzales said that the objectives for this season are for the Mustangs to go all the way and for him to keep improving.
“The goal is to win a state if we are the best,” Gonzales said. “I have a ring from baseball and the next step is to win one from football. As far as personal goals go, I intentionally try to better myself every day.”
Gonzales said for Grapevine to have a strong season and make a run at a state title, it will take an all-out devotion from him and his teammates.
“We must continue to bring the intensity to practice everyday and take one play at a time,” Gonzales said.
Jackson said that he “came to Grapevine to coach players like Dylan,” and said his expectation for Gonzales for the season is to continue to do what he knows his senior receiver will do.
“Dylan just needs to continue to improve each week,” Jackson said. “Dylan is one of our best blockers on the perimeter. I am so proud of his blue-collar attitude. We will see better defenses who will focus on him in their game plan. I believe he will step up even more as the games get bigger.”
