Fall is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to gear up for another year of special events and fundraisers. Hopefully, the summer break has energized everyone who will soon embark upon the massive planning and arranging that is necessary for a successful event.
Sadly, not every event produces the results hoped for. What is the No. 1 reason for a lack of success? A failure to get the word out to the public.
Poor communication about your event can seriously jeopardize the success of it. That’s why skillful event planners make publicity the first step in their marketing strategy. Without good attendance, it doesn’t matter that the organizers created a spectacular event. Here’s where the newspaper comes in with six ways to help you reach out to your audience.
Eyes on Arlington column
Each week in the Citizen-Journal, the Eyes on Arlington column covers a few upcoming events and reaches an audience of nearly 90,000. Perhaps your event can be featured. Of course, there isn’t space for all events to be covered, but we do our best to include as many as possible.
It’s easy to submit information for consideration. Just send a press release, a fact sheet or informal summary of the details about the event to me at email@example.com or call me at 817-996-5868. I have also created an event information form that I can email on request for anyone who prefers submitting information using the form.
Social Eyes column
Social Eyes publishes each Sunday in the Star-Telegram and reaches a massive audience stretching across the greater Tarrant County area. Information is submitted as described above.
Photos on the Social Eyes page
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. That’s why I strongly encourage all community organizations to use another free publicity tool that the Star-Telegram provides for local groups. What is the tool? The Click photos that run on the Social Eyes page. Photograph the event committee as it plans the upcoming event and also send photos from the event itself.
Submitting photos is a free two-step process:star-telegram.com/click star-telegram.com/click
Social Eyes Facebook page
Let us help your club with publicity through our social media channels. Begin by “liking” the Social Eyes Facebook page at www.facebook.com/socialeyes.st.
Once you are subscribed to the page, you can post information on it about your event. Or you can send news to me, and I will post your notices about upcoming events on the page.
Make the post even more effective and engaging by commenting on the post and sharing it with others. Even a few comments on a post can really help it go viral.
Want me to tweet about your event? Here again, help your message go viral by retweeting or favoriting my posts. Get started by following me on Twitter @FayeReeder so we can use this important social media channel to broaden your audience reach.
In addition to the free publicity tools listed above, it is wise to consider allocating whatever your budget can handle for some paid advertising in print or one of our digital advertising products to promote your event. The return on your investment will be big. Contact Baker Haynes at 817-390-7882 to inquire about pricing.
Hats off to all the hardworking volunteers and nonprofit staff members who will work tirelessly to make sure their upcoming events are a hit with the community. The newspaper considers it a pleasure and privilege to help you connect with your audience so your event will enjoy the success it deserves.
