The Bowie boys basketball team made a statement last Friday — but just barely.
Matched up against the only other undefeated team in district, the Vols edged Martin 55-53 to put themselves in sole possession of first place in District 3-5A entering this week.
David Chavlovich led the scoring with 21 points for Bowie, helped along by Brandon Hall (14) and Dante Hales (11). Before Tuesday’s action, played after the press deadline, Bowie remained undefeated with a 7-0 record at the halfway point in the district schedule.
Nick Babb and Andrew Dotson led Martin in scoring with 14 points each, and Patrick Burk contributed 11.
Bowie faced Weatherford on Tuesday and hosts Fort Worth Paschal at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Martin played host to Arlington on Tuesday and will get Weatherford at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Lamar visits North Crowley on Tuesday and Arlington at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The first time through their district opponents, Lamar topped each of this week’s opponents by 53-51 finals.
The Lady Vols didn’t have the same test from Martin as their boys counterparts last Friday, taking a 53-37 win from the Lady Warriors to remain undefeated, 9-0 in district play entering this week.
Emerald Mayfield led Bowie with 17 points, with another 15 coming from Nia Roberts.
With just four games remaining after their post-press deadline match with Weatherford, the Lady Vols appear to be on the verge of a special season, as they’ve lost just twice all year, their last defeat coming in tournament play against Pflugerville in late December. Since then they’ve been dominant, holding Sam Houston to 23 points on Jan. 10 and Arlington to just 13 on Jan. 14.
Bowie faces Paschal at 6 p.m. Friday.
