An eighth-grader at Brooks Wester Middle School died Wednesday afternoon after collapsing at the school.
Tiffany Phu, 13, was taken to Methodist Mansfield Medical Center at about 4 p.m. after an athletics class, Brooks Wester principal Andrea Hensley said.
“Our understanding is that she collapsed because of an asthma-related issue,” Hensley said. “We don’t have the medical examiner’s report, but that’s what the medical professionals said when they were working on her.
“She was coming into the building when she collapsed and they took her to the nurse’s office and called 911,” Hensley said. “Her mother was waiting to pick her up in front of the school and she said she waved at her when she went past.”
A candlelight vigil is planned for 8 p.m. Friday on the track and football field at the school, 1520 N. Walnut Creek Drive. Students have created a memorial with flowers and cards in the front entryway of Brooks Wester, Hensley said.
The Mansfield school district sent five student support crisis counselors to the school Thursday. Counselors and teachers from Linda Jobe Middle School also came to “relieve my teachers that might need a break, the ones who had Tiffany in class,” Hensley said. “The kids were really shaken up; the entire Wester family is shaken to the core.”
The Brooks Wester PTA is collecting gift cards for food, groceries and paper products, which can be dropped off at the school office, 1520 N. Walnut Creek Drive and marked for the Phu family, she said.
