A Tarrant County jury gave a life sentence to a man accused of fatally shooting the mother of his child, then shooting himself in the head.

Raheem Smith, 37, was convicted Thursday of killing Natasha McDade in the courtyard of a Fort Worth apartment complex March 20, according to a news release from the Tarrant County district attorney’s office.

McDade screamed and ran as soon as she saw Smith at the Primavera Apartments in the 2200 block of East Berry Street, where she lived with her two sisters and several children, the release said.

Smith chased McDade around the courtyard and shot her in the face, but he never lost consciousness after shooting himself, the release said. Smith recovered after treatment and was taken to jail, the release said.

Several of McDade’s relatives and a neighbor saw the shooting, the release said.

Smith must serve 30 years before he is eligible for parole, according to the release.
