Passenger traffic grows for American Airlines

The increase comes despite the cancellation of hundreds of flights during an ice storm.

Even with hundreds of flights canceled last month because of an ice storm at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, American Airlines and its merger partner, US Airways, both posted increased passenger traffic in December.

American’s traffic grew by 5 percent in December as its capacity increased 1.1 percent. Its load factor grew 3.1 percentage points to 83.3 percent for the busy holiday travel month.

Unit revenue at American also rose 9 percent compared with the same month last year.

At US Airways, passenger traffic rose 7 percent as capacity increased 3.6 percent. Its load factor was up 2.7 percentage points to 84.7 percent in December. Unit revenue rose 12 percent.

The solid traffic figures came after Delta Air Lines and United Airlines also reported strong traffic results. Airlines benefited from a late Thanksgiving holiday travel period that included the first few days of December.
