Upscale grocer planned for Southlake shopping center

The Fresh Market, a North Carolina-based chain that touts itself as a “food destination store,” also plans two stores in Dallas.

The Fresh Market, an upscale specialty grocer, will open a store this fall in Southlake at the Park Village shopping center being built at Southlake Boulevard and South Carroll Avenue.

The North Carolina company confirmed this week that the location will be part of its entry into North Texas. Last summer, it unveiled plans for two Dallas stores in the Turtle Creek Village and Arboretum Village shopping centers, to open in late 2014 or early 2015.

Peter Jacobsen, president of The Woodmont Co., which is developing Park Village, said at a recent groundbreaking that The Fresh Market will be one of the first tenants when the center opens in November.

Other tenants planned for the center, near Southlake Town Square and Central Market, are sporting goods store REI, Orvis, Gloria’s restaurant, RA Sushi, The Lash Lounge and Michaels.

The Fresh Market will join a burgeoning grocery market in Northeast Tarrant County. In addition to nearby Central Market, Trader Joe’s will open a store at Town Square this year.

And in Colleyville, Whole Foods Market is opening a store along Texas 26, not far from Market Street.

The Fresh Market operates 155 stores in 26 states, including five in the Houston market, and touts itself as “an extraordinary food destination store,” including a full-service meat counter, prepared foods and in-store bakery.

While the first stores at Park Village are expected to open in November, the shopping center is planning a grand opening in March 2015, Jacobsen said.

The shopping district will include big-box retailers and a more intimate walkable space with shops and restaurants. The development will also have a Bellagio-like fountain on the busy intersection.
