Active rigs in the Barnett Shale rose by four from a week ago to 35 as natural gas futures topped $4 per 1,000 cubic feet. Most activity is in the oil-rich parts of the field, however, led by Wise County with eight rigs, followed by Montague with six, Jack with five and Denton with four.

Nationally, Baker Hughes said rigs exploring for oil and natural gas rose by 12 to 1,775. There were 1,397 rigs seeking crude oil, up six; 375 seeking gas, up eight; and three miscellaneous, down two.

A year ago, there were 1,800 active rigs.
