Third baseman Adrian Beltre has yet to make the Rangers’ injury report for the spring for the first time since joining the club in 2011, an indication that his troublesome legs might not be so troublesome this season.
If so, Washington expects a better defensive campaign and maybe even another Gold Glove.
Beltre’s range appeared limited at times in 2014, and statistics support that notion. He also booted 14 balls after committing only eight errors in 2012.
Washington, though, still believes that Beltre is one of the game’s best defensive third basemen no matter how healthy his legs are.
Never miss a local story.
“He worked awfully hard this winter on his legs,” Washington said. “Will he have probably have some issues with his legs? The way he plays, he probably will.
“You have to have healthy legs at third base. If you don’t have healthy legs, you see what happened to Bell last year. It’s that simple. If his legs stay healthy, he’s going to pull the Gold Glove again.”
Catching some TV time
Rangers Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez has been hired by Fox Sports Southwest as an analyst for pregame and postgame shows. The number of games the 1999 American League MVP will work has yet to be finalized.
