Talk about teenage blossoming.
Fall in Texas means high school homecoming-mum time. An age-old tradition, homecoming mums have bloomed to new heights since their early days when they were simple pin-on (real) chrysanthemums. Today’s mums are works of art that seem to swallow up their wearers, who must use harnesses and back braces to keep them on.
When we asked readers to send us photos of their mums, we got about 70 pictures of over-the-top creations that came adorned with everything from Christmas lights and stuffed animals to giant cow bells and devices that played music. Guys even get in on the action now, wearing garters that often match their dates’ mums.
Some mums came with a special story, like the high school student who used her mum to raise money for charity or the grandmother-granddaughter duo who got to share the experience of their first mum together. Here are some of our favorites, along with the memorable stories behind them.
