I grew up in a town that was so small that I couldn’t walk to Tastee Freez without three people calling my mom let her know where I was. I couldn’t get away with anything.

Don’t let the homemade dressing, roasted turkey and pumpkin pie get you off balance this Thanksgiving season. We have so many blessings to be thankful for. This year we are most thankful for the brave men and women who have fought to keep our country free, those fighting now to keep us safe, and their families who have sacrificed holidays with their loved ones – to say the least. Given all our blessings, there’s nothing wrong with celebrating more than once a year.

Just call me Grace. It’s finally fall and I welcomed it with a fall of my own on a slippery, wet concrete floor. With my dominant hand in a splint, it’s been difficult to cook this week. Not wanting to bail on a previous commitment to take a dessert to a book club event, I reluctantly resorted to taking a cake made from a boxed mix. All of the recipes I’d earlier thought about involved too much mixing, too much hands-on, too much time.

My dad was a deputy game warden and I grew up eating deer meat, wild hog, squirrel, rattlesnake and fresh-water fish. I never really enjoyed the frog legs, and thankfully, he didn’t go frog gigging more than about twice a year.

Every day you decide what to eat, but you might not fully understand what triggers you to make these choices.
