I’m writing to thank Mansfield residents for their generosity in helping thousands of suffering children worldwide this Christmas. Through their efforts, we were able to collect more than 3,500 shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items for Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. These simple gift-filled shoeboxes communicate to needy children that they are loved and not forgotten.

Phew, Christmas 2013 is over, just a distant memory, as are my New Year’s resolutions. Got that behind me so I can focus on something else. Like reading. Like a book. From start to finish. Unlike Mr. Reads-a-lot, I can’t seem to find a book that will hold my attention so I can finish it in one sitting. My husband prefers a hard copy. I like my Kindle. He dog ears his pages. I use whatever’s on the table, a credit card receipt, a photo, an envelope, a bill or part of the bag from take out. And yes, I have book marks but they’re all holding my place in other books. Hence, the Kindle.

Brrr! The frigid cold keeps us inside and can add to the blahs. Cabin fever doesn’t really give us a warm feeling now, does it? It’s more like the January and February blues! The colorful decorations are gone and that just adds to the desire to have something new in the house.

My neighbor, Lesa Wagner, made some wonderful soup for us recently. The soup was so good I could (and did) eat it cold! If you don’t have two large crock pots, borrow one from a friend and you can return their crock pot with some of the delicious soup. I’m certain they’ll either ask for the recipe or offer their crock pot in exchange for another bowl very soon. Lesa’s Tortellini Soup is great, too, and I’ve included my version of green chile stew. My favorite aunt lived in New Mexico and this soup reminds me of her every time I make it. Enjoy!

Our very first Christmas was peaceful and joyous, wasn’t it? We probably got up and exchanged little momentos of love to each other. It’s been a while and my memory is foggy. However, I’m sure this was the year my sweetheart handed me his well-thought-out gifts wrapped clumsily with a wad of wrapping paper and a roll of cellophane tape. No ribbon. Hump.

As a parent, you have a pretty good idea when a family member has an injury or illness that’s more than you can tackle with an over-the-counter medication and a hug. While the holiday season is a festive time, it’s no fun if you or someone you love isn’t feeling well or whose illness gets progressively worse, plus accidents and emergencies always seem to happen when you least expect them. That’s when the hospital emergency department (ED) can be the best place to care for a medical emergency. But how do you know if your family’s illness or accident warrants the services of an ED?

There were no American flags lining up down Main Street here in Mansfield on Veteran’s Day?
