Losers in Arlington council runoff spent more than winners

ARLINGTON — Unsuccessful City Council candidates Michael Glaspie and Vera McKissic outspent their opponents in the spring contest.

Glaspie, a minister, spent $166,283 on mailers, signs, consultants and other campaign expenses, according to campaign finance reports filed with the city secretary’s office last week. Glaspie, a former Arlington school trustee, raised the most of all council candidates this year, with nearly $113,000 in donations.

Glaspie lost the June 14 runoff for the District 7 at-large seat to Jimmy Bennett by 826 votes. Bennett, a certified public accountant, raised more than $51,000 and spent more than $81,000.

McKissic, a southeast Arlington minister, raised $16,763 but spent nearly $94,000 on her campaign for the at-large District 6 seat, according to the reports. She lost the runoff to attorney Robert Shepard, who spent about $54,000 on his campaign, the least of the at-large council candidates this year.
