FORT WORTH — The race for endorsements continued in the runoff for District 3 on the Fort Worth City Council.

Eric Fox got what may be a first on Monday, when he was endorsed not only by the current mayor, Mike Moncrief, but by three former mayors: Kenneth Barr, U.S. Rep. Kay Granger and Bob Bolen.

None of the mayors could remember a similar group endorsement.

"That’s how important it is," Moncrief said.

Fox and W.B. "Zim" Zimmerman finished first and second out of seven candidates who were running to replace the late Chuck Silcox on the council. They’ll meet again in a runoff June 13. Early voting starts Monday and continues until June 9.

Fox grew up in Fort Worth and has known most of the mayors for decades — Bolen sold him his first bicycle. Granger, who met Fox when he was a congressional staffer, praised his "energy, enthusiasm, optimism and know-how."

Zimmerman was endorsed by Silcox’s widow, Brenda, shortly after the general election. She said Fox couldn’t effectively represent the district while working as an in-house lobbyist for Lockheed Martin.

Zimmerman has since been endorsed by the Fort Worth Police Officers’ Association and by most of the other candidates he ran against: Gary Hogan, Bill Lawson, James Nuttall and Elizabeth Jane McCune.

Another of the candidates, Matthew Hudson, endorsed Fox on Friday.

"None of the mayors are part of District 3, whereas all my support comes from within District 3," Zimmerman said. "You look at Barr, and he’s a lobbyist, too."

Barr now works as a consultant and sometimes represents companies at City Hall.
