A rousing race for mayor and a controversial school bond drew a large number of early voters in Southlake while turnout was lackluster in most other Tarrant County cities.
A total of 23,666 Tarrant County voters cast early ballots, according to county records.More than 15 percent of those early votes came from Southlake, a town of roughly 26,000 people. The Carroll school district, based in the city, is asking voters to weigh in on a $138 million bond package split into three propositions. About 3,800 voters cast early ballots in that race, more than the combined early and election day votes cast in the last Carroll school bond election in 2006.Southlake voters are also weighing in on two City Council races as well as the race for mayor between former Mayor Rick Stacy and Mayor Pro Tem John Terrell. Election Day is Saturday, and polls will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Hundreds of candidates are seeking positions on city councils and school boards in Tarrant, Johnson, Parker and Wise counties. Bond elections are scheduled that will determine whether hundreds of millions of dollars are spent. In Fort Worth, there are races for mayor and all eight City Council seats. The highest early-vote turnout was in District 6, where Councilman Jungus Jordan is running against Paul Hicks and Glen Bucy Jr., followed by District 3, where seven candidates are vying for late Councilman Chuck Silcox’s seat.Citywide, about 7,000 Fort Worth voters participated in early voting, a drop from the nearly 10,000 early ballots cast in the city’s last mayoral election in 2007.Early voting was unaffected by the swine flu outbreak, Tarrant County Elections Administrator Steve Raborn said.AMAN BATHEJA, 817-390-7695
