Social Eyes: Six ways to publicize your fundraiser or special event

Poor communication about your event can seriously jeopardize the success of it.

Fall is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to gear up for another year of special events and fundraisers. Hopefully, the summer break has energized everyone who will soon embark upon the massive planning and arranging that is necessary for a successful event.

Sadly, not every event produces the results hoped for. What is the No. 1 reason for a lack of success? A failure to get the word out to the public.

Poor communication about your event can seriously jeopardize the success of it. That’s why skillful event planners make publicity the first step in their marketing strategy. Without good attendance, it doesn’t matter that the organizers created a spectacular event. Here’s where the newspaper comes in with six ways to help you reach out to your audience.

Weekly newspapers

Contact the editorial staff at any of the weekly papers published by the Star-Telegram to request coverage of an upcoming charity event for that specific area. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. That’s why I strongly encourage all community organizations to use another free publicity tool that the Star-Telegram provides for local groups. What is the tool? The Click photos that run on the Social Eyes page. Photograph the event committee as it plans the upcoming event and also send photos from the event itself.

Submitting photos is a free two-step process:

• Go to and click on “Request Space for Photos” link. Complete information requested in each of the blanks that appear. An email confirmation will be sent after completion.
• Once again, go to and then click on “Submit Photo.” Read the instructions and complete each of the required fields, and upload your photo. Only one photo can be uploaded at a time. On the second and third (or more) photo submissions, all the required fields must again be completed with each photo subsequently submitted.
