Call it kismet, chance, providence, luck or just fortuitous timing, but when Indulge launched a decade ago, it coincided with what’s widely regarded as a new golden age of motoring.
Apart from the kerfuffle over GM’s bankruptcy and the disastrous marriage of Mercedes and Chrysler (divorced in 2007), the past decade has seen a host of proud marques roar back from the brink of irrelevance with astonishingly opulent, powerful and dynamic offerings.
It was just 10 years ago — a blink of the eye by automotive industry standards — that old masters like Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Jaguar, Maserati and Cadillac got sick and tired of watching their market share slip away to Ferrari, Aston Martin, McLaren, BMW and Porsche. Prodded by the white-hot poker of loss of sales, they arose magnificently, responding with outstanding workmanship, eye-poppingly gorgeous designs and blistering, pulse-pounding performance on both road and track.
This rising tide of quality lifted everyone. Today’s products from Ford, GM, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai and Kia (just to name a few) are light-years beyond what they were in 2005. Advanced technologies and multiple safety features once available only on high-end vehicles are now commonplace, as are sprightly performance, surprising comfort and luxury cabin touches even in budget offerings.
Over the years on behalf of Indulge, I’ve been fortunate enough to test drive many of these modern classics and report back to readers. And honestly, every time I open the door of one of these beauties and inhale the perfumed scent of finely tanned leathers, my first thought is always, “What did I do right to get a gig like this?” Followed quickly by, “I’m not worthy,” and always, always anxiously anticipating, “What’s next?”
I can’t wait. Hope you’ll come along for the ride.
And now, in honor of Indulge’s birthday, here’s a collection of 20 “raves” from my most memorable Road Raves reviews.
