The lavender isn’t blooming at Lavender Cafe yet, but it’s close.
The tiny cafe on a lavender farm in Cooke County offers lunches and desserts weekends on a screened-in patio.
Until the lavender blooms in late May, irises and other flowers decorate the farm and woods, all on a gravel road that feels far more than 10 miles off Interstate 35.
As you might expect, Lavender Cafe specializes in herbal flavors.
The menu includes a lavender-honey chicken salad, or a pecan-feta garden salad with lavender vinaigrette.
There are other sandwiches and salads, but save room for the lavender-lemon gooey butter cake. Alternate choices: lavender cheesecake or a lavender brownie sundae.
In 2009, owner and chef Jane Dane and her brother, landscaper Jerry Ware, converted an old family strawberry and melon farm to grow lavender.
She gathered recipes for the cafe and hosts a regular cooking school, along with selling lotions and soaps in a gift shop.
The sixth annual Lavender Festival is Memorial Day weekend.
Lavender Ridge Farms’ cafe is open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday-Sunday, at 2391 County Road 178, east of Gainesville off U.S. 82 near Oak Ridge.
It’s about 45 minutes north of Denton; 940-665-6938, lavenderridgefarms.com.Chop House Burger
But this isn’t the one you know from Arlington and Mansfield.
The Dallas Chop House steakhouse has opened a Euless burger grill, with more locations coming in Fort Worth and Southlake.
Here’s where it gets complicated: Chop House Burger is not the same as chef Kenny Mills’ Chop House Burgers (plural), perennial favorite in DFW.com’s Burger Bracket.
This Chop House Burger is more of a competitor for Twisted Root and other grills, serving a high-quality, all-natural burger with black truffle sauce ($5.95) or other toppings, first-rate fries and premium shakes.
Chop House Burger-Euless is open for lunch and dinner daily at 2720 Texas 121 (south of Glade Road), Euless, 817-358-2747, chophouseburger.com.Bird Café
Bird will serve a similar brunch menu with specials Mother’s Day, May 11. The craft beer gastropub has a more relaxed atmosphere by day; 155 E. Fourth St., 817-332-2473, birdinthe.net.
Early warning: Cast Iron at the Omni Fort Worth hotel and the Del Frisco’s Grille locations in Fort Worth and Southlake are filling up for Mother’s Day.
Most restaurants will open Mother’s Day, some for the only Sunday lunch all year. Check opentable.com and also watch this space.
