The rumors are not just half-baked.

The Star-Telegram’s Very Merry Cookie Challenge, the annual reader cookie contest we’ve held since 2004, has come to an end.

But we’re not just untying our aprons and shutting off the oven. For this, our 10th edition, we’re turning up the heat and letting you, the readers, decide which cookie — of all nine past winners — deserves the highest place on the platter.

The Star-Telegram has partnered with Central Market to present the Very Merry Ultimate Cookie Challenge, a “ Top Chef-style” live competition, taking place in Fort Worth on Dec. 18 and in Southlake on Dec. 19.

For $10, you’ll be able to taste all nine cookies that are winners from previous Very Merry Cookie Challenges (baked by the pros at Central Market) and cast a vote for your favorite. All proceeds from the event will go to the Goodfellow Fund, the newspaper’s holiday charity that supports needy children in the community.

There are just 50 spots in each of three tastings at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. both days, so if you love eating cookies and helping kids, don’t wait to sign up.

We’ll announce the grand-prize winner in the Life & Arts section of the Star-Telegram and on on Christmas Day.

If you’re wanting to make your own awarding-winning batches for the holidays, use this web app to explore the recipes for past cookie challenge winners.

’Twas the month before Christmas, when all through the newsroom

Not a day off was taken, not a journalist felt gloom.

The napkins were placed on the table with care,

In hopes that the cookies soon would be there.

The judges were eager and working in vain,

While visions of sugar highs danced through their brain.

Contestants with Ziplocs and Tupperware and platters,

Dropped off their goodies — presentation really matters!

From inside the judging room there came an update:

The doors were open! Time to sample and rate!

Away to the sweets the employees did scurry

Thirty cookies to taste, these things you don’t hurry.

Now chocolate! Now fruitcake! Now ginger and toffee!

On, peanut butter! On, oatmeal! Do we have stronger coffee?

By the end of the contest, a winner was named

The new cookie champ — happy, speechless and acclaimed.

For nine years we challenged our readers to bake,

It’s time to slow down, give our waistlines a break.

Thanks to all who have entered, and congrats if you won,

The Very Merry Cookie Challenge had a delicious run!
