The North Texas Firkin Fest had us at the Sledge Hammer.
The description from Dallas’ Peticolas Brewing is pretty simple: “Velvet Hammer on steroids.”
The 11.5 percent ABV version of the Velvet Hammer, which made the final four in DFW.com’s DFW Craft Beer Battle in 2013 and came very close to winning, is one of the special brews that will be available at the North Texas Firkin Fest, which takes place April 25 at Globe Life Park in Arlington (so just a week after all those ACM Party for a Cause festivities at Globe Life Park -- beer!).
Other participants will include Dallas’ Community Beer Company and Deep Ellum Brewing, Justin’s Rabbit Hole Brewing, Fort Worth’s Rahr & Sons Brewing, Blanco’s Real Ale Brewing, and Houston’s Saint Arnold Brewing.
Never miss a local story.
The beers are all cask-conditioned brews, and most our rare one-offs. We already love Rahr’s Iron Joe, a take on the brewery’s Iron Thistle Scottish-style ale that’s infused with Noir cold-brew coffee from Fort Worth’s Avoca Coffee Roasters. Rabbit Hole’s offerings will include the Ethiopian Rapture, Rapture Fusion Brown Ale cask-conditioned with Mystical Coffee’s Ethiopian Coffee. We’re also intrigued by Deep Ellum’s Capt’n Fantastic dry-hopped oatmeal pale ale and Real Ale’s 19th-anniversary Baltic porter.
But there’s much more, which you can find by scrolling toward the bottom of this, and still more to come, as not all the firkins have been announced yet.
Fort Worth’s Chimera Brewing Co. (till recently known as Zio Carlo Brew Pub) is the concessionaire for the event, which will also feature cask ales from Fort Worth’s Collective Brewing Project and Martin House Brewing Co.; Grapevine Craft Brewery; Dallas’ Four Corners Brewing Co. and Lakewood Brewing Co.; and Cedar Creek Brewery, about an hour southeast of Dallas. Austin’s Indepdence Brewing Co. will also be part of the fest.
Produced by the Texas Craft Brewers Guild, the fest will take place 1-5 p.m. April 25 at Globe Life Park. General admission is $35, which is good for eight sample tickets, each good for a 3-oz. pour. $70 VIP tickets buy you early entrance, commemorative T-shirt and growler.
