While watching a documentary on Martin Luther King Jr. last year, my stepson, who is African-American, asked, "Why were people so mean to blacks?"
How do you explain hate, fear, racism to a child? Fortunately, our household has always been filled with a mixture of heritages from Africa to Asia to Europe to the Americas, and we've tried to expose our children to the beauty of all people.
To me, MLK Day is another Thanksgiving. I'm grateful knowing that my family can sit in a public restaurant together, not separate. I'm thankful that others chose to stand up for civil liberties so I can sit at the front of a bus. I love that my family reflects the vision of a man who dared to dream that we could exist someday.
