Not-so-spooky Halloween haunts for the entire family

Taking the family out for Halloween fun doesn't have to be frightful for the pocketbook. Here are five free haunts in the Dallas/Fort Worth area:
Treat Street in The Fort Worth Stockyards
Join Stockyards Station and Radio Disney for a safe, family-friendly Halloween Party in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards. Activities include costume contests, pumpkin decorating, games and hayrides.
Good to know: Trick-or-Treating and Radio Disney activities will be held inside Stockyards Station Mallat 140 East Exchange Ave. Hayrides, refreshments for sale and games will be held on the lawn of the visitor’s center at 130 East Exchange Ave.

Scare on the Square in McKinney
Dress in your costume and go shop-to-shop to pick up your treats. Along with gathering goodies during the safe and fun trick-or-treating event, participants can enjoy interactive activities. Don't forget to enter the “Be Green on Halloween” costume contest where you're encouraged to make your own costume by using items that are already in your house. To enter the contest, just stop by the city's Office of Environmental Stewardship table during Scare on the Square to sign up. Prizes will be awarded to winners. Back this year is the "Ghost Hunt," where you try to find the 24 hidden cut-out ghosts around the 14 blocks of Historic Downtown McKinney. Fill out the Ghost Hunt Map for a chance to win a $100 shopping spree!
Good to know: Historic Downtown McKinney is closed off for trick-or-treaters to cross the street safely. Parking can be found throughout the historic downtown area. The event will go on as scheduled, rain or shine.

Día de los Muertos Festival in Dallas
The Latino Cultural Center's annual celebration will take a new spin on the festival with the theme, "Love Never Dies." Enjoy craft and puppet-making workshops, a special presentation by Cara Mía Theatre Co., Aztec dancers, face painting, music and much more!
Good to know: Check out the Love Never Dies exhibit, which highlights the artwork of local artists, through November 2.

Boo Fest at Irving Mall and North East Mall
Families can join Simon Kidgits Club for a special Halloween event, presented by Twentieth Century Fox, that focuses on fun fall festivities for kids. Activities will include a bounce house, face painting, temporary tattoo station, a costume parade and spooky crafts and more. In celebration of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Blu-ray/DVD releases of children’s movies The Croods (Oct. 1), Monsters vs. Aliens: Cloning Around (Oct. 15), Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness: The Scorpion Sting (Oct. 15) and Dragons Riders of Berk Part 1 and Part 2 (July 23), kids can partake in even more activities inspired by the films. Walk away with The Croods treat bag, Kidgits member-exclusive Halloween goodie, chance to win one of these popular DVD titles.
Good to know: North East Mall invites area residents to a safe, indoor Trick-or-Treating experience at 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 31. Bring your little ones to the mall where an assortment of candy, stickers and other fun treats will be distributed by participating retailers, while supplies last.

HalloweenFest in Bedford
Bedford offers kids a chance to make slime, get their faces painted, play in bounce houses and take part in carnival games.
Good to know: Trick or treat at candy stations and concessions will be available.
