A change in season calls for a change in your beauty regimen. Now that it appears our hot summer weather is here to stay for a while (after a nice cool spell earlier), it’s time for a makeup-bag check.
Products that hydrate, soothe and protect from UVA/UVB rays are high on the list of summer beauty essentials.
From skincare and haircare to foot care and sun-free tanning products, here are some things that will help you beat the heat and look great.
Steppin’ into summer
When sandals are the official footwear of the season, you have no choice but to make sure that your feet are in tip-top shape. Thankfully, LUSH Cosmetics makes that job a lot easier this year by bundling its four bestselling foot-care products into a limited-edition package. “Happy Feet” includes favorites like the Volcano Foot Mask (to deodorize feet), Stepping Stone Foot Scrub (to exfoliate and soften rough skin), Fair Trade Foot Lotion (to stimulate and cool tired feet) and a Geo Phyzz Bath Bomb (to soothe and soften). $24.95, LUSH Cosmetics (online only).
It might come as a surprise, but even your lips deserve attention (and protection) during the hot months. That’s why the brand Supergoop!, known best for its chemical-free sunscreens, developed a pink-tinted balm for keeping dry, chapped lips at bay. Made with shea butter and vitamins E and C, the AcaiFusion Lip Balm with SPF 30 promises to hydrate, repair and soothe lips while defending them from UVA/UVB rays. $8.50, Ulta.
De-stress your tresses
As you log countless hours under the sun and at the pool this summer, the scorching heat and chlorinated water can do quite a number on your hair. That’s where Aveda’s Suncare Collection for hair steps in. Described as a three-part defense and recovery system, the collection includes a protective hair veil mist (to minimize color fade, damage and dryness), a hair and body cleanser (to remove chlorine, salt and product build-up), and an after-sun hair mask (to restore sun-exposed hair, moisturize and defend against free radicals). $21-$27 each, Aveda salons.
To protect and defend
There’s often a misconception that unless you plan to spend the whole day in the sun, you can skip slathering on the SPF. Not true. Protection from UVA and UVB rays is just as important when going about your everyday business as it is when hanging by the pool. So what’s the perfect product for the job? Kiehl’s Activated Sun Protector Spray for Body. Available in SPF 30 and SPF 50, the lightweight, vitamin E-infused spray lotion is nongreasy, water-resistant and fragrance-free — so you don’t have to worry about smelling like you’re heading to the beach. $25, Neiman Marcus.
As temperatures continue to swelter, putting primer, moisturizer, sunscreen, foundation, etc., on your face is the last thing you probably feel like doing. But how do you simplify your beauty routine without losing the beauty part? The answer: BB cream. Kiehl’s Skin Tone Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream with SPF 50, to be exact. Formulated with a high level of vitamin C and available in four shades, the formula conceals imperfections thanks to its lightweight, buildable coverage; corrects skin-tone irregularities; hydrates parched skin; and fights future sun damage. $37, Nordstrom.
While wearing a foundation with SPF is a great step toward protecting your face from the sun’s harmful rays, experts say it often doesn’t offer the full amount of protection you need. While many foundations formulated with SPF only have a factor of 15, Bobbi Brown’s SPF 50 Protective Face Base provides a high level of protection against broad-spectrum UVA and UVB rays, which in turn prevents signs of premature aging and dark spot formation. Worn under makeup or by itself, the lightweight, fast-absorbing lotion also gives your face a giant boost of hydration to help smooth and plump tired, dry skin. $39, Neiman Marcus.
Looking to achieve that perfect sun-kissed glow without damaging your skin? Opt for a self-tanner. To make navigating the endless sea of options less daunting, we suggest L’Oreal Paris’ new Sublime Bronze ProPerfect Salon Airbrush Self-Tanning Mist. The wide-angle jet applicator was inspired by professional techniques to ensure continuous coverage as the super-fine mist is applied. The result? An even, streak-free, citrus-scented tan. $9.29, Target.
