A 4-year-old child was shot in the shoulder very early Sunday as he rode in a vehicle with his family along a highway, according to police and KDFW Fox 4.

The boy's family drove him to Cook Children's Medical Center immediately after the shooting, which occurred about 12:45 a.m., and he was listed in stable condition at the time. His condition was unavailable Sunday afternoon.

The child's family told Fort Worth police officers dispatched to the hospital that they were traveling near U.S. 287 and Miller Avenue when someone fired a shot into their car, according to the television report.

The bullet entered the child's shoulder and exited through his neck, the station reported.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the shooting, and police did not disclose any details about the case.

Police are looking for the shooter, the TV station reported.
