First in an occasional series in which we get nosy and ask interesting people around town to spill their bag -- and the stories behind the stuff in it.
As the owner of The Greener Good in Fort Worth, Liz Johnston is the first to admit she is a walking billboard for her eco-friendly business. From the bracelets she wears to the handbag she carries, Johnston's daily essentials come from her store.
"It's good for business," Johnston says. Or at least that's what she tells her husband about her frequent purchases from the store.
But we couldn't help but wonder: What's tucked deep inside her purse, where no one can see? Might there be the not-so-"green" paper receipts, gum wrappers and chemical-laden lip gloss that most of the rest of us are guilty of carrying around, too?
Never miss a local story.
Eager to see just what her eco-friendly daily essentials are, we took a trip over to the Foch Street boutique where Johnston (who is also a mother of two little girls) let us inside her bag and spilled not only its contents, but her thoughts on an eco-friendly lifestyle and why Paper Mate Profile Elite pens are the best.
Viking cork handbag. A Christmas gift, it features adjustable straps that let her alternate among carrying the bag on her shoulder, across her body and even as a backpack. The handbag's spacious interior comes in handy when dealing with her two daughters, Lucy, 4, and Polly, 2.
"I carry a little bit of everything," she says.
1Glass beverage bottle by Lifefactory -- "I always use a glass water bottle; this way nothing will leach into [the water]," she says -- and a recycled green-colored business card holder.
2Lunchskins Reusable Sandwich Bags.
3Recycled leather memo pocket notebook, car keys with wallet and all-natural Germ Buster spray.
4Sunglasses and her iPhone -- Johnston and her daughter make it a daily ritual to check the weather with her iPhone's weather forecast app.
5Reusable produce and shopping bags -- "You never know when you're going to need to shop."
6Badger Balm for Hardworking Hands and Doctor T's Supergoop SPF 30 sunscreen swipes -- "Chemical free and convenient! I carry them everywhere."
7Crocheted bead bracelets by Lily and Laura -- "I always have extra bracelets just in case my mood changes."
8Therapeutic oils ("We're thinking of carrying them in the store"), Paper Mate Profile Elite pens ("There's nothing green about it, but I love them!") and Badger lip tint and shimmer ("I get to use the tinted side, they [her daughters] get to use the shimmer side").
9Old Maid deck of cards, hair clips, Cinderella sunglasses and organic lollipops -- some of Johnston's "secret weapons" for keeping her little ones entertained.
