A toddler who crawled out of his grandparents' house through a pet door was mauled Monday afternoon by at least four dogs in the fenced backyard, the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department reported.
The 18-month-old boy was taken to Cook Children's Medical Center, spokesman Terry Grisham said. His condition was unavailable late Monday.
The child and his parents live with the grandparents in the 7800 block of Eastland Avenue in northwest Tarrant County, off Jacksboro Highway near Lakeside.
The dogs were owned by the grandfather, Grisham said.
Seven dogs were in the yard. Four were seized and will be observed by Fort Worth animal control workers, Grisham said. He said physical evidence connected the four to the attack.
The child's parents were asleep when the child left, Grisham said. He said the mother was awakened by the commotion and "got between the child and the dogs, saving the child from further injury."
The investigation was continuing Monday night, Grisham said.
While police were at the scene, Grisham said, a neighbor confronted the child's grandmother about the dogs, and the grandmother grabbed the neighbor by the throat and was arrested.
