Fort Worth school board President Ray Dickerson unexpectedly announced his resignation today, effective Thursday.
Dickerson cited health reasons in a letter to school board secretary T.A. Sims, which was released by the school district.
"While I am grateful to all who have offered their support and encouragement, I have concluded that it is imperative that I resign after consultation with my family, medical team, close friends and advisors," Dickerson wrote.
His resignation comes at a time when the district is searching for a new superintendent.
Melody Johnson resigned in June following six years with the district. Longtime Fort Worth educator Walter Dansby is currently serving as the interim superintendent.
Under school district policy, the board can name a new president from current board members, appoint a president from the outside or hold a special election.
