FORT WORTH -- If you plan to donate to your favorite nonprofit organization, Thursday is a good day to do it.
About 100 Tarrant County nonprofits -- and 500 in the region -- will participate in North Texas Giving Day, when a percentage of online donations received by each organization will be matched.
The matching money will come from a pool of about $700,000 raised by the Community Foundation of North Texas, the Communities Foundation of Texas, the Dallas Foundation, the Center for Nonprofit Management and the Funding Information Center.
Donations must be at least $25 to draw the partial match.
Never miss a local story.
"This is a tool to draw attention to online philanthropy and to choose one day for everyone to maximize their giving," said Nancy Jones, president and CEO of the North Texas foundation.
This will be the third annual Giving Day, although previous events mostly benefited Dallas-area organizations, Jones said. More Tarrant County agencies are involved this year. The previous events raised about $9 million in North Texas.
The percentage match each organization receives will depend on how many contributions are made, Jones said. About $80,000 in prizes are also available to participating nonprofits.
At Kids Who Care Inc., a Fort Worth performing arts organization, Giving Day is being used to move its fall fundraising campaign to the Internet. Usually the campaign is handled by U.S. mail.
The organization hopes to raise at least $11,000, an official said.
"We have always done a more traditional campaign, sending out letters for fundraising," said Andrea Ballard, marketing and public relations director. "So we are very excited about this opportunity."
Officials with Camp Fire USA First Texas Council hope the event with help strengthen communications with individual donors, said Zem Neill, president and CEO.
The organization sent e-mails and letters to potential donors letting them know about the matching funds.
"I feel like it's a win-win," Neill said. "It's a great way to call attention to the needs of nonprofits."
