Did Fort Worth really need another steakhouse and barbecue restaurant?
Sure -- if it's like the Branding Iron Smokehouse.
Two former employees of a Stockyards restaurant took their cooking to Boat Club Road in northwest Fort Worth. The result is a new Western steakhouse with plenty of smoky oak flavor.
The Branding Iron features barbecue by pit boss Ivan Shryver and co-owner Jere Yaeger. Brisket and chicken lead the menu of platters beginning at $7.95 with roasted corn, beans and warm bottles of Shryver's smoky-sweet sauce.
The simple steak menu starts with a large pork chop for $7.95 and goes up to a T-bone. The menu also includes bison burgers ($8.95), regular burgers and sandwiches.
The Branding Iron is at 8545 Boat Club Road, a former Portuguese cafe. It's open for lunch and dinner daily; 817-236-0045.
Winewood Grill , the new local-fresh grill cousin to Bob's Steak & Chop House, will open by next week in Grapevine.
Chef Brent Hines is from the Gaylord, with intermediate stops. Watch for a menu and more information at www.thewinewoodgrill.com; 1265 S. Main St., 817-421-0200.
Pizza lovers will have to wait a few more days for the arrival of Dough Pizzeria Napoletana in Dallas, the region's fourth certified authentic Italian pizza restaurant.
Dough, a spinoff from a San Antonio favorite spotlighted on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, will open at 11909 Preston Road; www.doughpizzeria.com.
(The other certified pizzas are Campania in Southlake and Dallas, Cavalli in Irving and McKinney, and Il Cane Rosso in Dallas, which also serves in Fort Worth on Thursdays at Times Ten Cellars, 1100 Foch St.).
One of the most common questions I get is: "Where can I find war su har?"
That's an old Cantonese bacon-and-shrimp dish remembered from Jimmie Dip's.
Found: Golden Moon Restaurant in Weatherford serves war su har. It's open for lunch daily and dinner Tuesdays through Saturdays; 1410 S. Main St., 817-594-1692, www.visitgoldenmoon.com.
