Set aside some time to celebrate summer by blowing giant bubbles with a bubble wand you make yourself. You will need:
Two 3-foot wooden dowels
Craft glue (we used Delta Sobo brand)
Never miss a local story.
1. Coat 8 inches of one end of each dowel with glue, then wrap with yarn.
2. Cut a 3-foot length of yarn and tie one end to the covered tip of one dowel, the other end to the tip of the other dowel.
3. Tie on a second, 4-foot length of yarn so that it hangs below the first.
4. Holding a dowel in each hand, dip the strings into a bucket or dishpan of bubble solution, then slowly pull the dowels apart, letting a soap film form between the strands of yarn. Wave the wand slowly through the air to make giant bubbles.
Homemade bubble solution
Stir together 1/2 gallon of distilled water, 1/3 cup dishwashing liquid (we used Joy) and 3 tablespoons glycerin (available at drugstores).
Wave this oversize wand through the air to create colossal versions of a summertime favorite. It'll probably take you a few minutes to figure out the right moves for making the best bubbles, but once you get the hang of it, you won't want to stop.
